Hohhot is committed to replacing coal with electricity and natural gas to ensure clean winter heating.

Hohhot is going to provide heating for an area covering 130 million square meters this year, according to Yun Junyi, director of heating department from Bureau of Public Utilities.

Before the winter heating season, which starts on Oct 15, Hohhot carried out desulphurization in coal-burning boilers in the city. It also plans to remove 83 coal-burning boilers with high energy consumption and polluting emissions by the end of this year.

The city has continued to push forward clean heating in the past years. From 2013 to 2016, Hohhot has renovated 132 coal-fired boilers, replaced 22 coal-fueled models with natural gas boilers, and cut winter coal burning by 400,000 tons, sulfur dioxide emissions by 926 tons, oxynitride emissions by 1045 tons, carbon emissions by 556,000 and dust by 2099 tons.

Apart from using clean energy, Hohhot has piloted utilizing "spare"heat in power plants to warm the area covering 8 million square meters.

"The combination of waste heat and efficient boilers can cut the coal consumption, and increase the utilization rate of resources," Yun added.
