Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport will enlarge handling capacity through a 391-million-yuan ($59 million) upgrade project starting this November and culminating in October 2019. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been published on the Jinwan District government website.

Zhuhai Airport Group Corp will make the terminal building one-third larger extending the current 91,600 sq m to 122,000 sq m. The expansion was outlined in the 2013 version of the Overall Plan for Zhuhai Airport approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the Guangdong provincial government.

The terminal will receive a make-over with specific construction to be carried out in almost all areas. Targets include the east-wing international terminal area, west-wing landside domestic VIP section, third and fourth floors, station canopy, viaduct, and outdoor electric line engineering.

A traffic center will be earmarked as planned. Mostly untouched will be the 30,000-sq-m parking lot in front of the terminal that provides 40 large and 1,500 small above-ground parking spaces. Only partial adjustments are scheduled for parking.

In addition, the project will add a green area of about 1,200 sq m required for building indicators.

A project head explained that service levels will be raised at the airport to meet large passenger flow and transportation volume as of 2025.
