Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Hengqin New Area allowed the first 20 veteran divers to meander in groups among tens of thousands of fish in Whale Shark Aquarium on Sept 12.

The ocean-themed entertainment venue allows up-close-and-personal encounters with marine animals to promote better understanding of the mysterious underwater world. Its deeper purpose is to increase awareness of the need to protect marine ecosystems, according to a project manager.

Even those without diving licenses may dive to 8 m, the tank's limit, with one-on-one guidance by professional coaches. Buoyancy control jackets and oxygen cylinders ensure safety. After overcoming water pressure, visitors can swim among more than 20,000 exotic sea fish of many varieties and colors.

Each dive is limited to three visitors and three coaches; any more would disturb normal activities, the manager noted.

The new adventure comes after the success of a similar one at Dolphin Island in April, and will be extended to Manatee Aquarium. The resort promises a range of scuba diving experiences for those willing to trade a little pressure for harmony in a beautiful underwater world.
