Beijing Normal University now has a satellite campus in Tangjiawan on par with that of the former Normal College of the Imperial University of Peking in Haidian District of the nation's capital.

BNUZ's elevation to full accreditation was brought about by a tripartite agreement between the Guangdong Provincial and Zhuhai Municipal governments, and BNU signed in Guangzhou on Aug 27.

The pact solidifies cooperation between Guangdong and BNU. This strengthens higher education reform and implementation of province-wide innovation-driven development. The Guangdong Party Committee and government will fully support the Zhuhai campus, stated a provincial official.

Since its establishment on Jinfeng Road in 2002 as the only sister of BNU, the Tangjiawan campus grew to have more than 23,000 undergraduate students by July 2017.

Based on the former BNU Zhuhai, the satellite campus will adopt a co-construction mechanism with Guangdong, Zhuhai, and BNU to concentrate on the demands of national education and culture, strategic emerging industries, and the frontier of international academia and technology.

It will further attract and integrate domestic and foreign high-quality resources, and foster internationalized and innovative talents. Furthermore, it will become a high-end science and education center integrating education, culture, health and technology, research, and innovation with worldwide influence, according to a spokesperson.

BNU will integrate premium international and domestic educational resources to bolster BNUZ as a southern campus on par with that in Beijing. It foresees a "Southern Silicon Valley" in educational innovation, which adheres to the educational, economic, and social demands of the country and Guangdong Province, said Dong Qi, president of BNU.

Zhuhai will help the campus develop better and faster, and assist it in becoming world-class with Chinese characteristics. Backed by BNU's superiority in education, the city's elementary education should also see overall improvement, noted a municipal government official.

Other attendees at the signing ceremony included Huang Ningsheng, vice-governor of Guangdong province, and Yan Wu, vice mayor of Zhuhai.
