Doumen Town has been listed on the second batch of China Characteristic Small Towns, the Ministry of Housing & Urban-Rural Development announced on July 27.

The locality in Doumen District joins only 13 other towns in Guangdong Province to win the honor. The town follows in the footsteps of Tangjiawan in north Zhuhai, which become China's second Famous Historical & Cultural Town in 2014.

According to the report, the recent selection of 276 places such as Yanqi Town in Huairou District of Beijing was conducted over several stages which included local recommendations, on-site interviews, and expert reviews.

Doumen Town in western Zhuhai is home to many tourist attractions, including the newly-upgraded 4A Yu Wen Quan Imperial Hot Springs Resort, Huangyang Mt -- the first peak in the portal of the Pearl River -- and Jintai Temple.

Positioned to become a cultural and tourist town, Doumen will step up efforts to become a hi-tech industrial base focusing on electronic and electrical appliances as well as a Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao tourist destination featuring countryside and leisure sightseeing.

The concept of a "township economy" was first put forward by district chief Ma Hongsheng in a government work report in November 2016. Township economy and industrial zone economy should advance shoulder-to-shoulder, Ma stressed.
