Facing death with bravery

It is difficult for people to spread positive and optimistic attitudes while facing death, particularly for those college volunteers who have never faced any death as they are young and still receive love from their parents and grandparents.

"Life is so fragile. Sometimes we just said 'see you tomorrow' to a patient and the next day, he just passed away," Zhang said with sorrow. "We need to get used to regarding every meeting as the last one."

The volunteers always feel sad after a patient's death as they had enjoyed many unforgettable and happy moments together, but they have to be brave and encourage the patients.

"We learn a lot about the truth of life through our experiences," Zhang mentioned.

Professor Zhang Jinshan, mentor for the volunteer group, said the work has taught these college students to understand and respect life.

Care and compassion in the last stage of one's life can not only make a patient feel relieved, but also let them know that everyone has to face death and there are people who are willing to accompany them.

"The volunteers understand the meaning of accompanying and caring for these patients, which is hard for people their age," Zhang praised.

To date, more than 700 college students have registered to join the volunteer group and over 400 social volunteers have also joined in their voluntary activities.
