India port upgrades with cranes from SANY in Gaolan

The delivery of six electric rubber-tire container gantry (ERTG) cranes developed by Zhuhai-based Sany Marine Heavy Industry Co Ltd began on June 26 to India's largest container port in Mumbai to aid in throughput upgrades.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port, also known as Nhava Sheva, is located east of Mumbai. It handles around 41 percent of the country's containerized cargo, crossing the historic landmark of 4.1 million TEUs in container throughput consecutively for the last five years and ranking 31st among the Top 100 Container Ports in the world.

The port recently invited international bids to select RTG suppliers for improvements on handling capacity and efficiency to meet increasing import and export demands.

Sany Marine Heavy Industry won the contract thanks to a topnotch design, satisfactory delivery capability, and impressive convenient international service. It signed the deal worth $15.4 million with the Indian Nehru Port Authority at the 2016 Indian Marine Summit in April last year, agreeing to supply 15 ERTG cranes for two-batch deliveries this year.

Other bidders included Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co Ltd, Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, and Liebherr Group, a large equipment manufacturer based in Switzerland.

Independently researched and produced at Sany Zhuhai Industrial Park in Gaolan Port, the gantries, although equipped with diesel-driven generators, use mainly electric power.

According to the company's R&D director, the gantry cranes will increase port handling efficiency and are environmentally friendly with low emissions of carbon dioxide. They meet the building goals of Low-carbon & Green Container Port that has been initiated worldwide.

Sany Marine Heavy Industry is a wholly funded branch company of Sany Group Co Ltd, the largest domestic engineering machinery manufacturer. It makes a whole series of port, ship, and marine engineering equipment at Gaolan Port.
