"Haiyang-6 will undertake arduous tasks during this voyage, which is due to last for 240 days in total," said Ye Jianliang, director of the GMGS, CGS. " A wide range of geological and geophysical research methods, including the use of deep-sea robot "Haima", will be applied to analyze and assess cobalt-rich crust resources, deep-sea resources and bottom sediment types," he explained.

Young scientists from countries including Ghana and Mexico are also on board alongside Chinese scientists, as the voyage provides them a great opportunity for international training and contributing to the development of global deep-sea research.

During the voyage, the scientists will spend 120 days researching the geology in the international sea area of the Pacific Ocean. Their research will provide basic information to further the study of the ocean's geological conditions and global climate change.

"The three-leg voyage will not only help safeguard China's rights and interests and strengthen China's role in dealing with international sea-affairs, but also promote China's deep-sea technology development and the country's participation in utilizing deep-sea resources," said He Gaowen, deputy chief engineer of the GMGS, CGS.
