The now-approved first phase of the Hezhou-Gaolan Port Expressway will serve as a fast route between Zhuhai Airport and Gaolan Port in Jinwan District, the municipal Housing, Urban-Rural Planning & Development Bureau announced on June 6.

It is one of the major transportation infrastructure projects during the 13th Five-Year Plan Period (2016-20) for the city.

Starting from Bawei Village of Baijiao Town in Doumen District, Phase I will access the Jiangmen-Zhuhai Expressway and go south to cross Zhuhai Avenue (S366) through Hezhou North Interchange. The line will run farther south to span the Hezhou Watercourse and pass through South Hezhou Reclamation Area, where the Hezhou South Interchange will connect with the Honghe Bridge. The expressway will then flow westward to cross the Baiteng River Waterway and lead to East Airport Road (S272) through the Baiteng Interchange.

Running along the Zhuhai Golden Gulf Golf Club in Jinwan District, the route will pass through Sanzao and Honqi towns and connect with North Airport Road via Hongqi Interchange. Bypassing the Puman Garden housing development, it will parallel the Damen River Watercourse and terminate at Dalin Community, where Dalin Interchange will access Airport Expressway. The 18.45-km Phase I will also connect with Hegang Expressway Phase II project.

The construction length from the starting point to Hezhou South Interchange is 7.11 km with five bridges and two interchanges to be constructed. The designed speed of the four-lane expressway is 120 km/h.

Meanwhile, from Hezhou South Interchange to the terminal point of the project will be 11.34 km with three interchanges. The expressway will have six lanes with designed speed of 100 km/h.

The Hezhou-Gaolan Port Expressway is the west extension line of the Honghe Bridge. The route will serve as the west extension line of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) and meet with the future Huangmao Sea Bridge. It will by then become a “development-driving force strip” to run through Zhuhai and influence the West Wing.
