More than 400 participants from China and abroad attended a charity hiking event at Jingyuetan National Forest Park in Changchun, Jilin province, on May 7, which helped villages raise 100,000 yuan ($14,478) to reconstruct their houses.

The hike took participants through the forest in the park and they finished their adventure at Shangri-La Hotel in Changchun.

During the event, young hikers had the chance to communicate with foreign teachers and practice their oral English. At the end, participants enjoyed coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and some special services offered by the hotel.

A charity auction was held in the evening after the hike, in which dozens of donations were sold. The funds raised through the hike and auction totaled 100,000 yuan ($14,478) will be used to rebuild run-down houses in Hougang Village, where villagers have been living in rough houses for the past dozen or more years.

Staff members of the Foreign Affairs Office of Changchun Municipality, one of the sponsors of the charity hiking event, said they intend to help more villagers live in better houses in 2017.

Tian Keqiang, general manager of the hotel, said the event provided an opportunity platform for western people living in Changchun to communicate with each other and offered them a chance to join in local charity events.
