Hohhot plans to build and renovate a number of schools for minority students in the coming years, according to a news conference held on May 3.

The news conference stated that nearly 250,000 square meters of school areas will be renovated or developed from scratch as part of the “school safety project”.

Additionally, Hohhot plans to build a further seven schools or kindergartens which offer lessons in Mongolian, one of the region’s native languages. The conference also took time to grant 18 minority students who performed well in the gaokao, China’s college entry examination. Subsidies were also given to 60 disadvantaged students and a further 171 students enrolled at part-Mongolian language schools.

In recent years, Hohhot has set up a special fund aimed at benefitting the region’s ethnic groups. Hohot counties allot specific funds to supporting the education of minority students and subsidies can be granted to ethnic group students enrolled at boarding schools. Preprimary children with a Hohhot hukou, permanent resident certificate, can receive a subsidy of 2,400 yuan ($348) every year.
