The predecessor of Binzhou Medical University was the medical school of the former National Shandong University founded in 1946. In 1956, the medical school gained its independence and was named Qingdao Medical School. In 1970, the school moved to Binzhou city and renamed Binzhou Medical University in 1983. In 2002, the Yantai campus of the university was officially opened.

By the end of March 2019, the university had 14 schools and departments, with 32 majors for bachelor degrees, six master's degree programs for first-rank disciplines, 39 master's degree programs for second-rank disciplines, and five authorized master's degree specialties.

The major in clinical medicine was selected among the list of first-class disciplines in Shandong province, and entered the top 1 percent in the global rankings set by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), an authoritative analysis and evaluation tool for measuring scientific research performance.

In 1985, the university founded China's first undergraduate program – medicine – for disabled youth, initiating higher medical education for the disabled in China. In 2012, it started enrolling visually impaired students and recruiting hearing-impaired students in 2018, helping to fill gaps in the undergraduate education of such students in medical colleges and universities across China.

In the past five years, the university has undertaken 1,536 scientific research tasks, including 106 for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 251 one at ministerial or provincial level.

The university has been expanding cooperation and exchanges with overseas educational institutions in recent years. It has reached collaboration agreements with the University of Alabama in the United States, the University of the West of Scotland, the University of Toronto in Canada, and 40 other universities, colleges and research centers around the world, including Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.

With two campuses in Yantai and Binzhou, the university covers a combined floor area of 637,000 square meters, with the total value of teaching and research equipment reaching 233 million yuan ($33.77 million).

It now has two directly affiliated 3A-grade hospitals, 19 indirectly affiliated hospitals, 14 teaching hospitals, and more than 140 practice teaching bases.
