The large-scale live-action musical A Thousand-Year Promise to Kunlun is inspired by ancient Chinese classics such as The Classic of Mountains and Seas and The Chronicle of Emperor Mu, Son of Heaven. It tells the legendary tale of King Mu of the Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC), aka Ji Man, who follows in the footsteps of his ancestor, the Yellow Emperor, and honors a long-standing covenant with the Kunlun goddess, the Queen Mother of the West. With a vow to connect heart to heart, he journeys thousands of miles to the western regions, overcoming countless hardships, ultimately fulfilling the covenant on Mount Kunlun. Their union resounds with the harmony of bronze bells and jade chimes, winning the hearts of all under heaven.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-capped Tianshan Mountains, A Thousand-Year Promise to Kunlun features a grand 20,000-square-meter live-action stage in the Nanshan scenic area of Urumqi. It fuses the solemn palaces of the Western Zhou with the dreamlike, mystical realms of the snowy highlands. A 3,000-square-meter multimedia visual array enriches the stage design, artistically presenting the costumes, music and dance of the Western Zhou era. With over 500 performers, the production blends acting with sound, light, electricity and water to create a visually and emotionally stunning theatrical spectacle.
