Xiangyang Museum, originally established in 1975, is a regional art and history museum. It is situated at the foot of Fenghuang Mountain in the southern part of the city.
The newly-built museum complex, designed in classic Tang Dynasty (618-907) style, consists of three distinct buildings. The central building, known as the Multifunctional Building, draws inspiration from the layout of the ancient city of Xiangyang. It houses a 52-meter-high Phoenix Pavilion, which soars from its center.
It currently preserves over 70,000 cultural relics including bronze wares, jade, pottery, ceramics and portrait bricks, with the collection of pre-Qin (before 221 BC) artifacts, particularly a large number of inscribed bronze wares being a major characteristic of the museum.
The museum runs a permanent exhibition that traces Xiangyang's long and continuous history, showcasing its rich and diverse cultures from the Paleolithic period (c. 75,000 BC) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Divided into six sections, the exhibition demonstrates the evolution of Xiangyang, highlighting its roles as a vibrant cradle of ancient Chu, Han, and Three Kingdoms cultures, an ancient military fortress, and a major transportation hub.
