The Lanzhou Museum, a regional museum dedicated to history and art, was established in 1984 on the original site of the Baiyi Temple with a history that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
It currently preserves a total of 12,728 cultural relics with a wide variety of categories, including ceramics, bronzes, jade, gold and silver artifacts, ancient books and paintings, sculptures, ancient coins, and items made of bamboo, wood, ivory, and horn.
Notable cultural artifacts include painted potteries of the Majiayao culture from the Neolithic period, bronze wares from the Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC), the Baiyi Temple’s 600-year-old stupa and its excavated relics.
The museum runs a permanent exhibition, divided into five different sections. By showcasing important artifacts spanning from the Neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the display uncovers the long history and rich cultural heritage of Lanzhou, a key town on the ancient Silk Road.
