Shandong University launches advanced tunnel boring machine

The "Shanda" tunnel boring machine (TBM), a high-pressure jet-mechanical combined rock-breaking shield machine, began operating at the Dongcang Station of Jinan Metro Line 6 on Dec 29.

The "Shanda" TBM will be used for tunneling between Dongcang Station and Shandong University Station. This section, located in Jinan's central urban area, features complex geological conditions, including hard diorite and gabbro with localized rock hardness reaching 90 MPa. The tunnel passes through layers of hard rock, mixed strata, and fully weathered zones.

To tackle these challenges, Jinan Rail Transit Group collaborated with institutions including Shandong University and China Railway First Group to develop the advanced TBM. The machine incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as high-pressure water jet technology for efficient rock breaking, a dual-screw structure for optimized muck removal, and a six-beam composite cutterhead for enhanced stability and cutting performance.

The machine has now successfully passed durability, pressure resistance, and safety tests and is expected to significantly enhance construction efficiency for Line 6, accelerating its completion.
