Nantong in Jiangsu province has in recent years fully leveraged its advantages in green energy to promote the transformation of its energy structure, driving economic progress through the development of green electricity.
Green electricity, also known as green power, mainly refers to electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as hydropower, wind power, solar energy, and biomass. It not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also lowers greenhouse gas emissions.
Statistics from State Grid Nantong Power Supply show that from January to November this year, Nantong's new energy generation exceeded 23.97 billion kilowatt-hours, equivalent to 35.45 percent of the city's total electricity consumption. By the end of November, Nantong's total installed capacity of new energy had reached 13.68 million kW.
Using its advantages in offshore wind power and other green energy sources, Nantong is pulling out all the stops to become a hub for clean energy industries, maintaining strong development momentum in wind power, photovoltaic energy, hydrogen energy, energy storage, liquefied natural gas, and other fields. In 2023, the output value of the city's new energy industry totaled nearly 130 billion yuan ($17.81 billion), with plans to exceed 150 billion yuan by 2025.
Nantong's official plan to peak carbon emissions states that by 2025, the city's wind power installed capacity will surpass 7.05 million kW. The city will promote the construction of nearshore wind farms, develop Nantong's offshore wind power bases, and further increase the proportion of wind power in the energy structure.
