Ningbo traffic police have issued an urgent call to the public to prioritize road safety, especially for vulnerable demographics such as the elderly and migrant workers. This plea was made on Dec 2, in conjunction with the 13th National Traffic Safety Day.

Despite ongoing initiatives to enhance road safety, the incidence of traffic accidents involving elderly individuals in Ningbo remains alarmingly high. Data from January to October underscored a concerning trend, with individuals aged 60 and above constituting half of the total fatalities in traffic accidents across the city. Accidents involving migrant workers also persist at an unsettling frequency.

An analysis of the root causes of these accidents pinpointed risky behaviors such as disregarding traffic signals, improper lane usage, and reckless jaywalking. The majority of these incidents occur on rural roads in counties, townships, and villages.

A spokesperson from the Ningbo traffic police stressed that a lack of awareness regarding traffic safety is a key factor fueling these accidents. Immediate actions and heightened public awareness campaigns are imperative to address these challenges and create safer roads for all residents.

Official statistics show that Ningbo's motor vehicle count stood at nearly 3.94 million as of the end of October, with automobiles comprising over 3.63 million of the total. The city is home to approximately 4.49 million drivers of motor vehicles, including around 4.38 million car drivers. The number of electric bicycles in the city is more than 5.35 million.
