Baotou city accelerates green hydrogen transition

The city of Baotou – located in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region – is rapidly transforming into a hydrogen energy powerhouse, using its resource advantages to help achieve the country's peak carbon and carbon neutral goals.

The city has already made significant strides in establishing a comprehensive hydrogen industry supply chain.

Key figures illustrate the momentum. The city's green hydrogen production – led by Huadian – has reached an annual capacity of 7,800 metric tons, achieving 100-percent renewable electricity usage and 99.999-percent hydrogen purity.

In solid-state hydrogen storage, three major companies – including ShyReachX New Energy Technology Co – are producing a combined 3,750 tons annually. What's more, the city has launched China's first demonstration solid-state hydrogen storage system.

Infrastructure is also advancing. A hydrogen pipeline project from Darhan Muminggan Joint Banner to the city center, with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year, is set to cut transport costs to just 2 yuan ($0.28) per kilogram.

Baotou is also expanding its hydrogen fueling network, with four hydrogen refueling stations operational and additional stations under construction. Manufacturer Beiben Trucks Group Co in Baotou has rolled out new hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, which are now running smoothly.

Backed by exceptional wind and solar resources, Baotou's hydrogen industry is said to have enormous potential.

The city's commitment to innovation and strategic planning is seen as ensuring its leadership in this emerging sector, firmly positioning Baotou as a key player in China's green hydrogen economy.
