Xi'an IP sector shows vigorous development

Xi'an has been actively exploring integrating  intellectual property with industrial economic development since August 2022, when it was designated among the first batch of national demonstration cities strong in IP construction.

According to the Global Innovation Index report by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Xi'an's global ranking steadily rose from 22nd in 2022 to 19th in 2023. It now stands at 18th globally and seventh in China's listed clusters.

The city's IP sector has shown a positive trend of widespread participation, solid foundation, strong momentum, and vigorous development.

Xi'an supports innovation entities such as universities, research institutions, and tech companies in key areas. It has established eight high-value patent cultivation centers for new materials, new energy vehicles, and other sectors. It focuses on nurturing 13 patent-intensive industries, such as smart manufacturing and bio-pharmaceuticals.

As of June this year, Xi'an had 99,600 valid invention patents, a 19.1-percent increase from last year. The number of invention patents per 10,000 people was 76.63, up 18 percent, and 165,800 registered copyright works, a 31.7 percent increase.

In 2023, Xi'an completed 7,872 patent transfers and licenses, ranking 17th among China's patent operation cities. It established the Xi'an IP Operation Service Platform, collaborating with 21 universities and 136 service institutions to provide multi-level, integrated services for innovation entities. Over 6,000 patents were achieved, and 700 technology demands were released.

The city has built the first national IP protection center in Northwest China, established the first foreign-related IP rights assistance center, set up 89 IP rights assistance service stations, and nurtured 15 standardized IP protection markets.

Xi'an has established 30 national technology and innovation support centers and 15 provincial copyright service stations. It has also approved the construction of a national IP service industry cluster experimental zone in the Xi'an High-tech Industries Development Zone.
