The Li Dazhao Memorial comprises the memorial hall and the former residence of Li Dazhao (1889-1927), pioneer and co-founder of the Communist Party of China.
Opened on Aug 16, 1997, the memorial features simple and elegant building designs that blend black, white and gray tones, incorporating both traditional Chinese characteristics and modern architectural styles.
Along the central axis of the memorial, there is a pailou-style archway at the southern entrance, with a name plaque inscribed by Jiang Zemin (1926-2022), the former president of China; eight pillars of achievements symbolizing Li Dazhao's significant contribution to Chinese revolutionary history, such as leading the New Culture Movement, initiating the spread of Marxism-Leninism in China, advocating socialism, founding the Communist Party of China, establishing a united front for revolution, facilitating the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, leading the workers’ and peasants’ movement in northern China, promoting the military concept of Party-led armed struggle, and nurturing youth leaders; eight large relief sculptures on the east and west walls of the memorial square depicting Li Dazhao's life and struggles in various historical periods; and 38 steps symbolizing his 38 years of life.
Inside the main building of the memorial, a stone sculpture welcomes visitors, engraved with Li Dazhao's writings, while a white marble statue of him stands in the center. The Exhibition of Li Dazhao's Life and Achievements presents a detailed overview of his life.
On the west side of the main building and along the north bank of an artificial lake, there is a grove of steles commemorating Li, including inscriptions from Party and state leaders, some of Li’s handwritten works, and calligraphy praising Li by renowned contemporary Chinese calligraphers.
As one of China's 20 most desirable sites for studying Party history, the memorial serves as a patriotic education base, a research center on Li Dazhao and a unique tourist attraction, highlighting the spirit of comrade Li.
Li’s former residence also opened to the public in 1997 and now features rooms restored to their original conditions as well as a collection of 720 items, including artifacts, documents, images, inscriptions, calligraphy and paintings.
The Li Dazhao and His Hometown exhibition is based permanently in the western room of the residence.
