The World Intellectual Property Organization released the 2024 Global Innovation Index (GII) preliminary report on Aug 27 during IP Week @ SG 2024 in Singapore.

According to the GII report, China is home to 26 of the world's leading science and technology clusters – more than the United States – and has maintained its top global position for the second consecutive year.

Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, ranked 18th on the global list of the top 100 science and technology clusters, up one place over last year.

The GII report highlighted that Xi'an submitted 306 PCT (international patent) applications and published 14,997 scientific articles over the past five years, with one article per 1 million residents.

In recent years, Xi'an has focused on building a comprehensive national science center and a nationally influential tech innovation hub to accelerate the nurturing of new quality productive forces and empower economic development.

In 2023, the city saw over 12,500 national high-tech enterprises and over 15,000 tech-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises. Xi'an's R&D investment reached 60.11 billion yuan ($8.47 billion) in 2023, with an investment intensity of 5.23 percent, ranking second among sub-provincial cities.

Since the start of the year, Xi'an has expedited the transfer and commercialization of tech achievements. The city has promoted 291 projects for on-site technology transfer, nurtured 3,469 technology managers, and achieved a total technology contract turnover of 162.77 billion yuan.
