The Shanxi province solid waste pollution prevention and control action plan was announced on Aug 6. Shanxi will accelerate the transformation of Taiyuan and Jincheng into zero-waste cities and encourage other cities to embark on this initiative.

By 2027, the proportion of zero-waste cities in the province is expected to reach 60 percent.

The plan's goals include reducing the intensity of solid waste generation across the province by 2025, improving comprehensive utilization levels, and guaranteeing the capacity for harmless disposal. The plan also suggests that working simultaneously to reduce both general pollution and carbon emissions will see clear and positive outcomes.

To achieve these objectives, the province will implement various measures, such as reducing industrial waste generation to advance the utilization of industrial waste, and enhance separation and recycling to reduce household waste.

By 2025, Taiyuan's urban household waste coverage is expected to reach 100 percent, while other cities are targeted to achieve a coverage rate of 70 percent.

Various social entities will be encouraged to participate during the construction of these zero-waste cities. This will help form a comprehensive management model that covers industrial and household solid waste sources and promotes a green lifestyle.
