The new Electrical Distribution Platform (EDP), a project operated by the world's largest oil and gas producer, Saudi Aramco, was installed on May 21, marking the commencement of the installation of the project's six platforms.

The installation of the 18,400-metric-ton EDP upper blocks was the result of collaboration between the marine monitoring and support team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Hainan Research Institute – based in South China’s Hainan province – and prominent shipping and marine engineering firms including COSCOL, DNV and McDermott.

The partnership helped the Hainan Research Institute, located in Sanya city, Hainan province, to explore the Saudi Arabian offshore oil and gas market and expand the cooperation in offshore oil and gas development in the Middle East.

In order to conduct real-time and comprehensive field monitoring and obtain accurate data during the installation, the team independently developed a support system.

This comprises various subsystems for marine environment monitoring, centimeter-level positioning guidance, offshore multi-body separation monitoring and comprehensive video monitoring.

Most notably, the team integrated an augmented reality training system into the project. The system can simulate an actual on-board training environment at the installation site, ensuring the safety and precision of the entire installation process.
