On April 23, Wang Wenjie, the on-site operations manager of Guiyang Xiaowan River Ecology and Environment Co, introduced some new residential areas that have been established along the Xiaowan River. Once notorious for its foul smell, the river is now pristine, attracting many residents for leisurely strolls.

In 2018, Guiyang city organized a comprehensive investigation of black and odorous water bodies throughout the city, identifying a total of 29 sites, including the Xiaowan River.

Guiyang made concerted efforts to control its black and odorous water bodies, with all 29 sites meeting China's water quality standards.

During the control process, the city completed 36 projects for the control of black and odorous water bodies, investing approximately 3.43 billion yuan ($474.65 million). Approximately 72 kilometers of new sewage mains and branches were constructed, about six kilometers of sewage pipelines were dredged and repaired, and over 300,000 cubic meters of sludge were removed.

In addition to improving pipeline infrastructure, Guiyang city has also made significant efforts in constructing reclaimed water plants.

Taking the Guancheng River as an example, Guiyang city has built two sunken reclaimed water plants to collect and treat pollution from the Guancheng River basin. All treated water is reused as ecological replenishment and returned to the Guancheng River.

These two plants now provide 100,000 to 130,000 metric tons of ecological replenishment water to the Guancheng River basin each day, bringing vitality back to its main channel, which had been low on water for nearly 20 years.
