From April 18, Shanghai's public transport system, including the metro, buses, and ferries, has expanded its payment options to include foreign bank cards, allowing travelers to use international payment methods for commuting around the city.

According to the Shanghai Public Transport Card Company, this initiative aims to enhance the travel experience for foreign visitors in Shanghai, providing a diverse range of public transportation services.

The move is an effort to create a convenient and efficient payment environment, offering multiple payment methods, including online, offline, and automatic deduction services. Additionally, the company has produced guidelines for payment services and established various offline service points to assist foreign visitors.

Shanghai public transport is accessible by the Shanghai Public Transport QR Code, NFC mobile transport card, and physical transport cards.

The Shanghai Public Transport QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode that allows users to ride buses, ferries, and the metro within Shanghai without needing to pre-load funds. Passengers must present the QR code to the transport device, enabling them to enjoy a "ride first, pay later" service and a hassle-free commuting experience. The QR code is accessed through the WeChat mini-program, the Shanghai Public Transport app, and Alipay.

The NFC mobile transport card can be used via the Shanghai Public Transport app. After activating the NFC mobile transport card, users can recharge it by selecting their linked foreign bank card through WeChat or Alipay within the Shanghai Transport Card app.

For physical transport cards, recharging is available at offline CVM machines.

In addition to these measures, the Shanghai Transport Card Company has established multiple offline service counters and points to provide timely, efficient solutions for overseas visitors, aiming to enhance their travel experience in Shanghai.
