The Cantonese Opera The Royal Jasmine Garland premiered at the Jiangnan Grand Theatre in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on Jan 23. It brought to life the ancient Legend of Royal Jasmine, a tale passed down for centuries in the Guangdong region.
This Cantonese Opera portrays the heroine Su Xin, who stood dignified against the arrogant ruler Liu Chang of the Southern Han Dynasty (917-71) and successfully softened his heart. Su Xin's story highlighted her ordinary yet noble spirit, ensuring the safety of the Southern Han people, avoiding a war and culminating in a love story with General Zhao Tingxuan.
