China's parcel delivery industry is poised to set a new record of handling 14.25 billion items this year, maintaining robust and growing momentum, according to Zhao Chongjiu, head of the State Post Bureau of China on Tuesday.

Last year, China's parcel delivery sector achieved remarkable accomplishments. It was expected to set a record by handling 13.2 billion parcels last year, a year-on-year increase of 19.5 percent.

"Last year, the parcel delivery sector has improved the ability for smooth circulation, boosted the efficiency and capability to handle parcels and enhanced the sector's intelligent development," Zhao said.

He made the remarks at the industry's annual conference in Beijing.

Dedicated freight airports and air hubs were constructed and put into operation to improve logistics efficiency.

Last year, the dedicated cargo airport in Ezhou of Hubei province, mainly invested by SF Express, was put into full operation. Another freight air hub in Jiaxing of Zhejiang province, mainly invested by YTO Express, started construction.

Parcel delivery service and network have been improved in rural areas to facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to urban areas and commodities to rural areas, leading to increased rural residents' income and improved life quality.

To promote the sector's global development, 312 overseas distribution centers and 300 warehouses were established.

This year, the sector will continue to build major infrastructure facilities and improve cargo transportation capability in air and road services.

Parcel deliveries by high-speed railway system are also expected to be more common while multimode transportation will also be promoted.

China's parcel delivery sector has experienced rapid development in the past decade.
