Yangzhou's distinctive cultural techniques spotlighted in exhibition

The fourth exhibition showcasing Yangzhou-style painting mounting and restoration techniques recently commenced at the Slender West Lake Painting and Calligraphy Institute in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province.

The exhibition brings together master craftsmen specializing in Yangzhou-style painting mounting and restoration from various regions across China and features representatives of intangible cultural heritage projects related to painting mounting and restoration.

Visitors can also explore tools and historical documents associated with Yangzhou-style painting mounting and restoration, gaining a comprehensive insight into its allure.

A vital component of China's intangible cultural heritage, Yangzhou-style painting mounting and restoration techniques have earned widespread acclaim for their exquisite craftsmanship and distinctive style. Originating from the late Ming (1368-1644) to early Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, these techniques blend regional aesthetics and cultural characteristics, epitomizing the refined culture of Yangzhou.

According to Bu Wanshui, an inheritor of the Yangzhou-style painting mounting and restoration techniques, this artistry is capable of restoring aged and damaged paintings to their original splendor.

The exhibition makes its return after a 36-year hiatus since its inaugural edition in December 1987. The objective of hosting such exhibitions is to rejuvenate and safeguard this distinctive traditional cultural craft with Yangzhou's local characteristics and introduce it to a broader audience.
