The Kubuqi 2-million kW photovoltaic sand control project, jointly invested and constructed by China Three Gorges Renewables Co and Elion Clean Energy Co, achieved full grid connection in Hanggin Banner of Ordos city on Dec 2.

It is the largest solar power project in China.

Launched in 2021, this massive project spans 100,000 mu (6,666.67 hectares) and has received a total investment of 11.15 billion yuan ($1.75 billion). Its construction incorporates a 2-million kW photovoltaic site, three 220 kV substations, and an ecological project to treat 100,000 mu of desert.

To ensure the smooth delivery of power from the Kubuqi 2-million kW photovoltaic sand control project, Inner Mongolia Power Group has also invested 716 million yuan in the construction of the Gushanliang 500 kV transmission and transformation project, as well as the corresponding 220 kV line output project.

The completed project is estimated to deliver 4.1 billion kWh of green energy to the West Inner Mongolia grid a year, which equates to saving 1.23 million metric tons of standard coal.

This will reduce CO2 emissions by 3.20 million tons, SO2 emissions by 29,500 tons, nitrogen oxide emissions by 8,600 tons, and particulate matter emissions by 12,300 tons.
