Elekta taking aim at more healthcare solutions

Continuing its tradition of debuting products at the China International Import Expo, Swedish medical equipment producer Elekta unveiled a gamma surgical knife at the sixth CIIE in Shanghai. The company has chosen the CIIE to showcase its latest products every year since the expo's inception in 2018.

Shanghai Xiehua Brain Hospital, set to officially open in 2024, became the first medical institution in China to adopt Elekta's latest product by signing a contract with the company on Nov 5, the opening day of the expo.

"The CIIE provides a great platform for us to showcase our latest technologies and exchange with more industry partners," said Laurent Leksell, founder and board chairman of Elekta. "In fact, the positive spillover effect of the CIIE is very significant every year. It can accelerate our products' access to the China market and bring more potential cooperation opportunities."

Leksell said Elekta has continuously expanded its presence since entering the Chinese market in 1982. The company has its largest manufacturing and research and development base in Beijing, and its second-largest software R&D center in Shanghai.

"We are able to unleash the vitality of local innovation while serving the global market with the intelligent practice results in China. The results of these local innovations also have referential value to our global practice, which drives us to continue to innovate and bring more possibilities to cancer treatment," said Leksell.

Earlier this year, Elekta formed a radiation therapy services joint venture with the China National Pharmaceutical Foreign Trade Corporation, aimed at increasing usage of radiation therapy in lower-tier cities. With more than 41 years of experience and over 1,500 devices in use here, Elekta has developed treatments tailored for Chinese users and patients.

"China is one of the most important markets for Elekta," Leksell said, expressing optimism about the company's development prospects by citing the nation's congenial business climate and promising healthcare industry. "We are well aware that China is a very important driving force in global development and has always adhered to its opening-up and win-win principle while continuously providing a high-quality business environment for multinational companies."

Leksell noted that China has become the second-largest medical market in the world, with fast-paced industry development and growing demand for new technologies and products. He believes the high-quality development of China's healthcare industry will bring more opportunities for Elekta.
