A cargo cabin on a bulk carrier is undergoing de-rusting with ultra-high pressure waterjet technology at IMC Shipyard (Zhoushan) Co on Xiaogan Island in Putuo district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, according to local media reports.

The technology provides a glimpse into the district's efforts to advance green transformation and upgrades of its ship repair industry, and has been applied widely at its shipyards above designated size.

Zhuang Jianjing, manager of the scientific and development department of IMC, said that the technology has effectively reduced pollutant emissions and improved the working environment.

Zhuang added that his company has developed robots this year, which makes it possible to de-rust cabins.

The district, which has also developed green ship repair technologies such as automated welding and wastewater recycling, is currently home to the largest green ship repair base in China. Its green ship repair standard system is being promoted nationwide.

From January to August this year, the district's shipbuilding industry achieved a total output value of 8.27 billion yuan ($1.13 billion), a year-on-year increase of 35.6 percent.

Four shipbuilding companies in the district have been listed as members of the Steel Products Certification Center, or SPCC, which consists of 19 top-notch ship repair enterprises in China.

In addition, authorities have implemented a series of measures, including establishing industry standards, to help small shipbuilding enterprises achieve green transformation.
