In the vast Kubuqi Desert in Ordos, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, workers from the China Three Gorges Corporation are busy constructing the Kubuqi Base Project, which is the largest wind and photovoltaic power project in the Gobi desert.

On August 3, 2022, the project was approved and construction started at the end of that year.

The total installed capacity of the project will be 16 million kilowatts, including 8 million kilowatts of photovoltaic power and 4 million kilowatts of wind power, according to the corp.

It also includes the construction of advanced and efficient coal-fired power plants with an additional installed capacity of 4 million kilowatts, and the configuration of multi-scale and multi-type energy storage of approximately 4 to 6 million kilowatt-hours.

By developing new energy in a centralized and large-scale manner, it aims to promote clean, low-carbon, and efficient utilization of energy.

The power generated by the project will rely on the West Mongolia to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei direct current transmission channel proposed in the national power plan of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) and will be sent to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in an integrated method of wind, fire and storage, contributing to the Three Gorges strength for regional economic and social development, the corp said.
