Putuo Mountain Airport in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, was approved to open international flights on Oct 17, becoming the 5th such airport in the province, according to local media reports.

The airport's transportation, communication, office facilities, and corresponding organizations and personnel are all qualified for opening to the world.

Wang Xingyue, president of Zhoushan Putuo Mountain Airport Co, said that the airport will spare no effort to support the international aircraft import business and will try its best to open  international flights to Southeastern Asian countries next year.

The opening of international flights will play a key role in transforming Zhoushan into a modern maritime city and advance high-quality development of its marine economy, said a local official.

The airport opened to air traffic in 1997 and currently operates 33 flights to cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and some coastal cities.

The airport transported 1.7 million passengers from January to September this year.
