Ningbo company develops innovative, dynamic torch for Asiad

The main torch used at the 19th Asian Games opening ceremony in Hangzhou on Sept 23 was designed by Zhejiang Dafeng Industry Co Ltd, a company based in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province.

Dafeng brought a unique element of movement to the torch by incorporating a bionic mechanical skeleton system, dynamic decoration system, combustion system, and intelligent control system.

Feng Jialong, deputy general manager of Zhejiang Dafeng Industry Co Ltd, explained that the main torch consists of 19 mechanical columns, each representing a different edition of the Asian Games. The columns are arranged in a wave-like pattern and can change into two distinct forms.

One form, when the wave is curled, stands at a height of approximately 9 meters and resembles traditional Chinese auspicious clouds. The second form, when the wave is unfurled, reaches a height of approximately 19 meters, resembling the surging tides of the Qianjiang River, a major river in Zhejiang province. This form is the form the torch will take when it is lit.

To ensure safety and water resistance, Dafeng developed a combustion system that utilizes dual nozzle ignition technology, allowing the torch to remain lit even in strong winds and heavy rain, withstanding intensities of up to level 10.

In addition to the main torch, Dafeng also provided a range of high-tech systems for the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium. These systems include lighting, sound, and large screens, creating a fully immersive and captivating experience for spectators of the Asian Games.
