Minority traditional sports in Sanya gain popularity

Sanya has witnessed a surge in popularity of minority traditional sports, including arrow shooting, kicking shuttlecocks and coconut tree climbing.

Coconut tree climbing, in particular, has gained loads of fans and enthusiasts over the years. It has now become an established sports competition with strict regulations, professional referees and specialized equipments.

The sport is included in the annual Sanyuesan Festival celebrations and the provincial traditional games of ethnic minorities.

Currently, Sanya is gearing up for the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities, which will be held in 2023. With 15 venue-related projects, seven have already been completed, ensuring the smooth progress of the preparations.

Sanya has been making efforts to promote traditional sports for ethnic minorities. The sports facilities for ethnic minorities have been improved. Moreover, it also hosts various traditional sports competitions and promotes minority traditional sports in schools.
