From January to May this year, Guoyuan port in Liangjiang New Area, Southwest China's Chongqing municipality, recorded growth in a series of indicators and indexes, and its cargo throughput reached 11.02 million metric tons, a year-on-year increase of 10.7 percent.

Meanwhile, over the first five months, the port had processed 400,000 containers, and about 355,000 commodity cars had been carried to or from the port, up 10.9 percent.

Niu Xiandan, general manager of the Chongqing Guoyuan port International Logistics Hub Construction and Development Co, said that many coastal cities in China, as well as overseas countries, send cargo to the port, which is set to be then transferred to reach Southeast Asia and Europe via the China-Europe (Chengdu-Chongqing) freight train or the New western land-sea trade corridor.

The Chongqing-Wuhan direct water route opened in May, which has greatly cut logistic costs for enterprises, and now at least 1,000 yuan ($141) is saved for every container transported.
