Nuclear power units provide 5% of China's power

China currently has 53 nuclear power units under operation, with a total installed capacity of 55.57 million kilowatts, according to figures released by the National Development and Reform Commission during a press conference held in Beijing on Friday.

Electricity produced by nuclear power accounts for almost 5 percent of the country's total power output, said Lian Weiliang, deputy director of the commission.

The country also has 28 units under construction with a total installed capacity of 32.72 million kilowatts. For years China's nuclear units have been under operation in a safe condition, it said.

National Energy Administration said it would further promote nuclear heating in the country and make greater contribution to clean energy heating in northern parts of China.

Nuclear heating projects in Haiyang of Shandong province and Qinshan of Zhejiang province are currently under construction for a large-scale development of clean heating in the country, it said.
