The Joint Laboratory for Gallium Nitride Lasers, which was co-built by the Everbright Institute of Semiconductor Photonics and Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics at CAS, was recently unveiled in the Suzhou New District in East China's Jiangsu province.

The lab will help Suzhou industrialize gallium nitride laser chips and assemble more firms as part of the industrial chain.

Min Dayong, chairman of the Everbright Institute of Semiconductor Photonics, voiced his confidence in success, saying that Suzhou Everbright Photonics Co Ltd, which he also chairs, has China's only one 6-inch high-efficiency semiconductor laser assembly line.

In August, the Suzhou New District established the Everbright Institute of Semiconductor Photonics in partnership with the firm. Min serves as chairman.

Suzhou, which is home to 160,000 industrial firms, boasts one of the most complete industrial chains in China. The Suzhou New District is home to 142 national high-tech photonics firms, the output of which is worth nearly 30 billion yuan ($4.3 billion).
