The total number of motor vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, on the road in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, was 5 million as of Oct 15, ranking first in the province and fourth among large and medium-sized cities in China, local media outlets reported.

Statistics show that the number of automobiles in downtown Suzhou and its administered county-level cities was 2,138,745 (including 100,632 new energy vehicles) and 2,786,951 (including 102,272 new energy vehicles), respectively.

According to the 2021 China Urban Transportation Report, Suzhou has led other domestic cities by registering over 3 million vehicles on the road in the Traffic Health Index last year.

The report was co-released by several departments and authorities, including the Department of Big Data Development of the State Information Center and the Tsinghua University Transportation Research Center.

Suzhou has a large number of vehicles yet enjoys a smooth traffic flow. The reason is that on one hand, Suzhou has strengthened transport infrastructure construction, and on the other it has vigorously pushed forward a green and low-carbon model of travel.

Suzhou, a city with a floating population of 16 million, through an efficient and orderly transportation system, is a city that is prosperous but not congested, busy but not hurried, offering residents a good quality of life.
