In the past 10 years, the Pudong New Area in Shanghai has made efforts to expand green spaces and open up new opportunities for tourism and leisure in order to transform itself into a "park city" and create a pleasant urban environment for locals.

The area has built a number of distinctive parks in its suburban areas, such as Heqing Suburban Park which opened to the public in 2021. The park includes rural villages, farmlands, orchards, and forests, offering the public a place to experience village culture and enjoy rural life.

Pudong has also made full use of the public space along the east bank of Huangpu River. The 2.2-square-kilometer space used to be quite dirty and odorous. The local government launched a campaign to improve and beautify the area. Now, its waterfront sections have become popular spots for locals to exercise and get a tan during the summer.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, the area has launched a project to build an open, innovative and high-quality Pudong, and made great strides in promoting "park city" construction, aiming to make the area a greener and more beautiful place to live.

According to official data, the forest coverage rate of Pudong has reached 18.46 percent, while the urban green coverage rate has expanded to 40.19 percent. The city now has 80 urban parks, while the per capita public green area has increased to 13 square meters.
