Jiangyin Port, an important port along the Yangtze River in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, has been making efforts to create a zero-carbon port in recent years.

Five years ago, Jiangsu Jiangyin Port Group Co, manager of Jiangyin Port, started reshaping the port's energy structure and gradually shifting to green electricity.

Green electricity refers to clean electrical power produced from eco-friendly sources or in such a manner that very little or no harm is done to the environment.

The seven distributed wind power systems, which contribute 54 percent of the group's total electricity consumption, and 154 hybrid wind and solar street lamps are the main sources of green electricity at the port.

The group has also installed photovoltaic power generation systems over each building's roof and built charging piles for electric vehicle and natural gas filling stations to make full use of renewable energy sources and clean energy.

To date, the Jiangyin port area has saved more than 36,000 metric tons of standard coals and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 73,000 tons in 2021 alone. It also reduced carbon emissions by 26,000 tons.

In addition, Jiangyin Port has benefited from the construction of a zero-carbon port. Energy consumption per 10,000 yuan ($1487.34) in output has been reduced by 43 percent and energy consumption per 10,000 tons of throughput has decreased by 30 percent.
