Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province is becoming cleaner, as local authorities proposed turning it into the cleanest city in the country in 2020.

Over the past two years, the city has renovated 580 backstreets and created a group of lanes and streets with beautiful environments and unique local identities.

In April, Wuxi published a three-year action plan with the goal of becoming the cleanest city in China, and by 2024 the city hopes to have cleaner roads, bluer skies, clearer rivers, more beautiful scenery, and a more livable environment.

Cleaning companies responsible for downtown roads are required to clean not only the road, but also dustbins, public restrooms, and household waste on both sides of the roads.

All districts in Wuxi are also creating a demonstration zone that is clean enough for residents to sit directly on the ground by employing both manual workers and street sweepers.

Benches along roads in downtown Wuxi serve as a temporary resting place for pedestrians, and some shopowners in backstreets are also offering seating outside their shops to passersby.

This year, Wuxi is expected to build or renovate benches in 2,000 public spaces. To date, the city has built benches for 415 public spaces and renovated benches in 866 public spaces.
