China will lay out several bioeconomy pilot zones in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta reigon, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, according to bioeconomy guidelines during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) issued by the National Development and Reform Commission on May 10.

The document put forward the nation's intention to give full play to the relatively complete biological industrial system, solid research foundation, abundant medical resources, and extensive connections with foreign countries shared by advanced regions, including Beijing, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Chongqing, and to build several bioeconomy innovation hubs in these regions.

Chongqing's medical industry posted an output growth rate of 11.9 percent last year, with 400 newly registered medical products.

In March, a circular released by the municipal government to boost its biomedicine industry clarified the goal of achieving a total industrial scale of 200 billion yuan ($29.76 billion) at the end of 2025.

A State-level biomedicine industrial cluster centered on the Chongqing International Biological City will soon be established in the municipality, supported by five biomedicine industrial bases in Liangjiang New Area and four other places.
