The latest COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai is now on a downward trend as the number of subdistricts and towns with more than 100 new daily infections has dropped for three consecutive days, the municipal health authority said on Wednesday.

"This shows that the spread of the virus at community level has been contained effectively," said Wu Qianyu, a primary inspector from the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission.

Notably, the Jinshan and Chongming districts in the city saw zero COVID-19 community transmissions for the first time on Tuesday, said Wu.

Health authorities pointed out that the epidemic situation in the districts of Pudong, Minhang, Songjiang, Qingpu and Putuo have been improving over the past three days. The situation in the districts of Xuhui, Yangpu, Hongkou, Changning, Baoshan, and Jiading have been mostly stable with slight fluctuations.

Meanwhile, the number of new infections has been rebounding in downtown Huangpu and Jing'an districts.

Shanghai registered 2,494 confirmed cases and 16,407 asymptomatic infections on Tuesday. Among the confirmed cases, 1,800 were those who were individuals related to previous cases and were already under hotel quarantine, and 533 were previously asymptomatic.
