Wuxi was named a comprehensive pilot city for national blockchain innovation and application, according to official outlets from 16 central departments, including the Cyberspace Administration of China.

The city in East China's Jiangsu province is one of 15 cities around the country to be listed, and is also the only listed city in the province.

Officials said that as a comprehensive pilot city for national blockchain innovation and application, Wuxi will carry out cross-industry applications with blockchain technology to promote the intensive and balanced layout of blockchain infrastructure and facilitate the digital transformation and high-quality development of the city's economy and society.

The first batch of 21 key demonstration and innovative application scenarios will be built in Wuxi.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Cyberspace Administration of China unveiled a guideline in 2021 to accelerate the application and industrial development of blockchain technology.

According to the guideline, the country's blockchain industry is expected to reach an advanced level globally by 2025, with related applications penetrating daily life.

A number of well-known blockchain products, especially those involved in product traceability, data circulation and supply chain management, should be available by then.

The guideline also stated the country aims to nurture three to five backbone enterprises with international competitiveness and a group of innovative enterprises related to blockchain while also creating three to five blockchain clusters in the field.
