An exhibition themed on wooden lacquer ware of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220) opened at Yangzhou Museum on Oct 26, showcasing 130 pieces including 38 from Jingzhou Museum.

Jingzhou, located in Hubei province with a history of over 3,000 years, unearthed a lot of wooden lacquer ware of the ancient Chu State, whose influence extended to the Han Dynasty.

Yangzhou and Jinzhou launched technical cooperation in 2013 for the protection and repair of the wooden lacquer ware and have made great achievements over five years.

Examples of lacquer ware coated with rigid materials such as gold foil and silver foil were the most difficult ones to repair.

"This piece was out of shape and the gold foil was broken when it was unearthed, making it even more difficult to repair," said Wang Ziyao, a staff member from Yangzhou Museum.

In addition to the lacquer ware, tools and techniques applied in its repair were also displayed at the exhibition. Seminars were organized for experts and scholars to share experiences and promote appreciation for ancient lacquer ware.
