The first Monitoring Report on Basic Modernization of Chinese Cities was released in Beijing on Dec 1. The report pointed out that the more developed prefecture-level cities of China have embarked on a new journey towards socialist modernization. Yangzhou ranked 38th in the top 100 basic modernization index (including sub-provincial cities) for prefecture-level cities that was included in the report.

The report was jointly issued by the Competitiveness Think Tank, China Economic Herald, Beijing Zhongxin Urban Planning and Design Institute and other institutions, and has established a "Monitoring System of Basic Modernization for Chinese Cities" covering economic development and modernization of economic systems, people's lives, public services, cultural development, production, ecology, governance systems and capabilities.

The index is used to monitor all prefecture-level cities (including sub-provincial cities) and county-level cities across China. Comparisons and verifications were made in the report through public data from each city for 2020, allowing the first monitoring and evaluation of the modernization of Chinese cities to be completed.

The report showed China's prefecture-level cities (including sub-provincial cities) have an average index score of 73.13 out of 100, indicating that China's more developed prefecture-level cities are marching towards socialist modernization. Among them, Yangzhou's index reached 74.61, ranking 38th among prefecture-level cities in China.

The report also included a similar index for county-level cities, with an average index of 72.75, indicating that the modernization of county-level cities is close to that of more developed prefecture-level cities. The basic modernization index for Yizheng reached 72.08, ranking 45th among county-level cities, while the basic modernization index for Gaoyou reached 69.74, ranking 57th among county-level cities nationwide.
