The Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province, held the finals of the 23rd Undergraduate Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition from Nov 27-28.

Out of the 3,125 works submitted to the competition, 104 qualified for the finals. Among them is a transparent flexible battery developed by a team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering.

According to Bi Shuaihang, a member of the development team, the supercapacitor can be used in foldable smartphones, transparent devices, vehicles, aviation and aerospace due to its portability and flexibility. The team spent two years assembling the battery and have published an SCI paper as well as obtained a patent for it.

Zhang Juncheng and Wu Hongyu, who are also from the school of Materials Science and Engineering, created a COVID-19 test kit that can produce results in only two hours. During lab tests, the kit had a 100 percent accuracy.

The kit can be used to help ease the burden on healthcare systems in cities, as well as provide additional testing solutions for lesser developed areas, according to the two students.

A team from the School of Computer Science developed a facial recognition system based on video analysis. Unlike systems that can only work when in close contact with subjects, the software can identify faces from a distance, compare the information with a database and provide alerts.

Launched in 1999, the Undergraduate Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition is usually held in the university at the end of every November.
