Shanghai to accelerate development of graduate education

Shanghai authorities recently issued guidelines on accelerating the high-quality development of its graduate education sector.

Students' ability to innovate and serve economic and social development is highlighted in the guidelines by the Shanghai Municipal Education Committee, the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission, and the Shanghai Municipal Finance Bureau.

The guidelines also set a goal of building Shanghai into an attractive education highland for global top scholars and students by 2035.

Centered on talent cultivation, the reforms in graduate graduation will be carried out in all areas including admissions, curriculum design, discipline construction and teaching evaluation, according to the guidelines.

More support will also be provided for cultivating professionals adept in cutting-edge technologies and in key industries such as integrated circuits, biomedicine and artificial intelligence.

Universities are encouraged to cooperate with enterprises to train graduates and push international cooperation to a higher level through means such as internship opportunities at more international organizations and opening overseas campuses.

The guidelines also call for efforts to ensure the quality of international student education and increase the proportion of degree students from abroad.
